Taupō is one of the best mountain biking destinations in New Zealand — and it’s not even close. Over 380km of purpose-built trails spread across volcanic terrain, lake shores, river valleys and native bush, with options from gentle lakefront paths suitable for the whole family through to Grade 5 downhill runs that attract riders from around the world. This guide covers everything you need to know to make the most of mountain biking in Taupō in 2026 — the best trails, where to rent bikes, how to get shuttles, and how to plan your trip.
The Great Lake Trail
The Great Lake Trail is Taupō’s flagship multi-day riding experience and one of New Zealand’s Great Rides. The full trail spans 71km around the western shore of Lake Taupō, running from Waihaha in the south to Kinloch in the north. The trail passes through remote native bush, along clifftop ridgelines with lake views, and through sections of open farmland — the variety of terrain is exceptional.
Most riders split the Great Lake Trail across two days, staying overnight at Kinloch Lodge or the Waihaha Hut. The trail is Grade 2–3, making it accessible to intermediate riders with reasonable fitness. E-bikes are increasingly popular on this trail — the climbs are manageable but the extra assistance makes the experience more enjoyable for less experienced riders.
Key sections of the Great Lake Trail:
- Waihaha Link Trail — begins at the Waihaha River carpark on Western Bay Road, winding along the river toward Lake Taupō. Excellent bush riding with river crossings.
- W2K Trail (Whakaipo section) — runs from Whakaipo Bay to Kinloch, 90% bush-covered with a good mix of climbing and descending. Suitable for intermediate riders.
- Kawakawa Bay Track — from Kinloch Beach to Kawakawa Bay, smooth and flowing with coastal views and good birdlife. A favourite section for all abilities.
Craters Mountain Bike Park
The most accessible and popular trail network in Taupō, and a genuine world-class facility. Craters Mountain Bike Park sits directly adjacent to the Craters of the Moon geothermal area, five minutes north of town. The park has 30+ trails covering all grades from green (beginner) through to black (expert), with a well-designed trail network that allows riders to build difficulty progressively through a single session.
Craters is particularly well-suited to families and first-time trail riders — the Grade 1–2 green trails are smooth, flowing and genuinely enjoyable rather than just “easy.” The Grade 3 blue trails are excellent for intermediate riders wanting to push their skills, and the Grade 4–5 black trails offer serious technical challenge for experienced riders. The volcanic terrain creates uniquely grippy trail surfaces that feel fast and confidence-inspiring in dry conditions.
Entry to the park is by donation. There is a carpark on Karapiti Road with toilet facilities. Trails are clearly marked and a free trail map is available at the carpark kiosk.
Best for: All abilities, families, first-time trail riders, technical riding
Location: Karapiti Road, 5 minutes north of Taupō town centre
Grade range: Grade 1–5
The Huka Falls Trail — lake path from Taupō to Aratiatia
For riders who want a scenic, low-pressure ride from the town centre, the Huka Falls Rotary Ride is the perfect option. The trail runs from Spa Thermal Park in central Taupō along the Waikato River to Huka Falls, and continues on to the Aratiatia Dam — a return distance of around 17km that most riders complete comfortably in two to three hours at a relaxed pace.
This is a shared-use trail (cyclists and walkers), fully accessible on a hardtail mountain bike or hybrid, and largely flat. The river scenery is beautiful throughout — the electric blue of the Waikato River alongside the trail, Huka Falls at the midpoint (which you can lock your bike and walk to), and the dramatic Aratiatia Rapids at the far end. The dam gates release at 10am, 12pm, and 2pm daily, creating a spectacular rush of water that’s worth timing your ride around.
This trail is ideal for guests staying at Fine Stays properties — several of our homes are within a short ride of the Spa Park trailhead, meaning you can ride directly from your accommodation.
Best for: All fitness levels, families, casual riders, e-bikes
Distance: ~17km return (Spa Park to Aratiatia Dam)
Grade: Grade 1–2
The 42 Traverse
For experienced riders looking for something more epic, the 42 Traverse is a 46km Grade 3 ride through the Tongariro Forest that’s widely regarded as one of the best adventure mountain bike rides in New Zealand. The trail takes you into sub-alpine terrain with views of Mt Ruapehu, Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngāuruhoe — riding through native bush, open tussock and volcanic rock for a full day in the saddle.
The 42 Traverse is a point-to-point trail — you start at one end and finish at the other, meaning you’ll need a shuttle. Several Taupō operators offer guided 42 Traverse packages including bike hire, guide, and shuttle return. E-bike versions of the traverse are increasingly available and open the experience to a wider range of riders.
Best for: Experienced riders, guided groups, full-day adventure
Distance: 46km one way
Grade: Grade 3

Shuttle services for mountain biking in Taupō
Several of the best trails in the Taupō region are point-to-point, making a shuttle essential. The main trails requiring a shuttle are the Great Lake Trail (full or part-route), the 42 Traverse, and the Timber Trail (further south toward Pureora).
Adventure Shuttles is the most established shuttle operator in Taupō, offering custom drop-off and pick-up for trail riders. They also offer guided packages for the 42 Traverse and Great Lake Trail with bike hire included — the easiest option for visitors who don’t want to organise logistics themselves.
For the Great Lake Trail specifically, water taxis across Lake Taupō can be used as part of the shuttle logistics — several operators offer bike-friendly water taxi services from Taupō Marina to Kinloch or other trailheads, cutting out the road drive entirely.
The lakefront cycle path — easy riding in Taupō town
Taupō’s lakefront cycle path is one of the most enjoyable easy rides in New Zealand. The sealed path runs along the lake edge from the town centre south toward Two Mile Bay and beyond, with Lake Taupō and the volcanic plateau as a constant backdrop. It’s flat, well-maintained, and suitable for all ages — the kind of ride where you stop regularly to take photos because the view keeps getting better.
The lakefront path connects to the Great Lake Trail at the southern end, meaning you can ride from the town centre all the way into backcountry trail networks without loading a car. For guests staying at Fine Stays properties near the lake, this path is accessible directly from most of our homes.
Best for: Families, casual riders, all abilities, e-bikes, morning rides
Surface: Sealed path
Grade: Grade 1

E-bikes in Taupō
E-bikes have transformed mountain biking in Taupō over the past few years. The region’s trail network was already excellent, but the addition of e-bikes has opened up trails that were previously too challenging for casual riders — including the Great Lake Trail and the 42 Traverse. All of the major hire operators in Taupō now offer e-bike options, and they’re available at Craters Mountain Bike Park too.
If you’re a rider who hasn’t been on a mountain bike for a while, or you’re travelling with a mixed-ability group, an e-bike is almost always the right choice. The trails are more enjoyable when you’re not exhausted halfway through.
