A spa pool is wonderful. A sauna is next level. And if you can have both in the same Taupō holiday home, your next getaway just got significantly better.
At Fine Stays, three of our Taupō holiday homes feature private saunas — and if you’ve never ended a day in a sauna followed by a cold plunge and a hot spa pool, you’re about to discover one of life’s genuinely great combinations. Here’s everything you need to know about booking a Taupō holiday home with a sauna.
Why a sauna makes a Taupō holiday special
Taupō already has a natural affinity with heat — the whole region sits on geothermal activity, the hot pools are world-class, and the Waikato River runs warm. Adding a private sauna to your holiday home just amplifies what’s already great about staying here.
Practically speaking, a sauna does things a spa pool simply can’t. The dry heat loosens muscles more deeply, the temperature goes higher, and the ritual of heating up and cooling down — in and out, spa pool, sauna, repeat — is genuinely restorative in a way that a single soak never quite matches. After a day on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a morning of trout fishing, or a long bike ride at Craters of the Moon, a sauna is exactly what your body needs.
And in winter, there’s nothing better. Taupō winter evenings are crisp and clear — the kind of cold that makes stepping into a hot sauna feel like the best decision you’ve ever made.
Taupō holiday homes with saunas — Fine Stays
The Manor – spa pool, sauna, 5 bedrooms, sleeps 11
The Manor is set in expansive landscaped gardens surrounded by native New Zealand bush, making it one of the most atmospheric sauna experiences in Taupō. Step out of the sauna into the cool garden air, then straight into the private spa pool — with bush birdsong and the smell of native plants around you, it’s a setting that’s hard to beat. Five bedrooms sleeping 11 guests, indoor and outdoor fireplace, trampoline for the kids. If you’re looking for a Taupō holiday home with a sauna that feels genuinely special, The Manor is the one.
Amazing Views – spa pool, sauna, 5 bedrooms, sleeps 12
Amazing Views combines the sauna experience with some of the best lake views in Taupō. After your sauna session, cool off with the lake spread out below you, then settle into the 6-seater spa pool for the final act. Five bedrooms sleeping up to 12 guests, just 50 metres from the lake. For groups who want both a sauna and a large spa pool — and one of the best outlooks in Taupō — Amazing Views delivers.
Stunning Views – spa pool, sauna, 4 bedrooms, sleeps 11
Stunning Views is the most central of our sauna properties — a short walk from both the lake and Taupō town centre. Four bedrooms sleeping 11 guests, with the spa pool and sauna positioned to make the most of panoramic mountain and lake views. Rated 4.95 stars across nearly 200 stays. If you want a Taupō holiday home with a sauna and the ability to walk to dinner, this is it.
How to get the most out of your sauna stay
If you haven’t used a sauna much before, here’s how to make the most of it during your Fine Stays visit:
Start with the sauna. Get in, heat up for 10–15 minutes, then cool down — outside in the fresh air, under a cold shower, or a dip in the Lake. Repeat two or three rounds. The contrast is the whole point.
Hydrate properly. You’ll sweat significantly in a sauna. Drink water before, during breaks, and after. Keep a cold drink on the deck.
Evening is best. There’s something about a sauna as the sun goes down that makes it particularly good. The light changes, the temperature drops outside, and you have nowhere to be.
Don’t rush it. The sauna ritual is supposed to take an hour or two. Build it into your evening rather than treating it as a quick tick-off.
It’s better with company. A sauna is inherently social — conversation flows easily, phones are nowhere to be seen, and by the end you’ll have had one of the best group conversations of the trip.
Sauna and spa pool — the perfect Taupō combination
All three Fine Stays properties with saunas also have private spa pools, which means you get the full contrast experience. Sauna heat, cool down, spa pool warmth, cool down again. It’s a loop that’s genuinely hard to step out of.
This combination — sauna plus spa pool — is still relatively rare in Taupō holiday accommodation. Most properties have one or the other. Fine Stays has three homes with both, and every one of them is available to book direct.
Which sauna property is right for your group?
If you’re travelling with a large group (up to 12), Amazing Views is the best fit — larger home, big spa, great lake views. If you want something private and special surrounded by nature, The Manor is extraordinary. If central location and walkability matter, Stunning Views is the one.
Get in touch if you’d like help choosing — we know these properties inside out and are happy to match you to the right one.
